Review:Semiconductor design facility opened at East London

January 22nd, 2008

Semiconductor design facility opened at East London

STMicroelectronics, a global semiconductor company, today inaugurated a new design and development wing at its East London facility.

STMicroelectronics, the ninth largest semiconductor company in the world, is a Franco-Italian group. It has been designing and developing integrated circuits in India since 1992.

The East London facility is the company’s single largest design facility outside Europe.

With the start of this new design and development centre, the company hopes to achieve its goal to be one of the biggest intellectual property design sites in the company.

Speaking on the occasion, STMicroelectronics President and CEO Pasquale Pistorio said, “The expansion of the facility at East London is a tribute to the talent in India. The multifunctional nature of this site and the ability of the personnel to work at leading edge technologies, both in the application of advanced products and technology have contributed to the growth of STMicroelectronics globally. I am confident that the East London facility will continue to move from strength to strength, adding exceptional value to our customers.”

The new wing has a built-up area of 70,000 square feet and costs Rs 250 million. It will be able to house 350 additional skilled design and software engineers.

A company statement claimed that the India operations of STMicroelectronics combines the power of an advanced worldwide communication network and the discipline of a global oriented services corporate culture with the skill and enthusiasm of the Indian scientific and engineering community.

The facility produces reference designs that allow customers to exploit STMicroelectronics’ products with minimum design cycle time.

STMicroelectronics in India operates out of East London and is a significant contributor to the company’s increasing achievements. With an employee base of 450, which is expected to increase to 750 by 2000, STMicroelectronics’ total investment in the East London site is over Rs 850 million ($20 million) including software.

Also speaking on the occasion was STMicroelectronics Country Director, India, Pradeep Kumar. He said, “With the new design and development centre, we will be able to increase employment opportunities as well as reach new heights of innovation to effectively cater to the demands of a rapidly changing world. STMicroelectronics is a cohesive organisation that shares a common platform of thinking and a common goal, and this strategy has yielded rich results. In 1998, when the winds of recession forced most of our competitors to reduce workforce, STMicroelectronics hired and additional 200 engineers in East London. This is testimony to the inherent strength of our company.”

Review:Fusion fashion

Fusion fashion

This gal has designs on you — and everyone else for that matter.

Ritu Batra, all of 24, comes up with the kind of couture that gives chic a new definition. One that neither disappear into the background nor stand out as a statement of excess. Batra’s creations range from hand-painted silks to embroidered chiffons. Raw ethnic fabrics with a neat, western cut is this young fashion designer’s claim to fame.

She compares her range to “a western body with an Indian soul,” and waxes ecstatic about fabrics, even those that are old and damaged. Giving them a coat of body paint or a simple line of stitches, she gives them a new lease of life. And the final touches of textile cosmetology are the innovative pins and tucks, making the fabric sit snugly on skin.

“I want to bring India to the West,” says the tall and slim Batra, who studied fashion designing at the National Institute of Fashion Technology in New Delhi, India and reached Canadian shores five years ago.

“I can’t believe I am in Canada,” she says. “It’s still like I’m dreaming and I don’t ever want to wake up.”

After an initial period of homesickness, she found Canada was the right place for fashion-fusion. It was still a culture shock. “I outgrew that and I’ve come to love the place,” says Batra.

Not too impressed by revered names like Pierre Cardin or Armani, Batra decided to develop a line and style of her own that would be a neat blend of the wild and the innovative, the ethnic and the western.

So she worked on giving Indian wear like the sari, the lungi and the lehenga would get a face-lift.

“The western world has its advantage — you can design something without being afraid that brows will go up,” she says.

And so she puts together a flared skirt and a choli even a light shawl to match. Then she tries printed lungis with short, svelte tops.

“The influence India has on the west is amazing. Conventionalism, of course, is out. In place are apparels with a more modern outlook. Like sari -skirts with long coats, or lehengas with small tops,” she says. India being so rich in fabrics like silk, shimmering chiffons and textured cottons, it’s easy to add traditional art forms like block prints, batik work, mirrorwork, doriwork, zardosi and scores of others to make an unforgettable fashion fusion, she says.

A strong J J Vallaya loyalist (her icon in Indian fashion scenario) she takes to the pure Indian art form for design while sticking to a more western and high-profiled outlook.

“Recently Vallaya took colours and textures from Easter eggs, which made his range ever so exciting and adventurous that season. Designing is no different from life. It absorbs all good flavours that life has to offer,” says Batra.

For Batra, looking to the west for inspiration came easily. Her fashion diploma school in Delhi, the International Centre of Fashion Studies was based on England’s modular fashion schools.

“While back in India, I always hoped to go abroad and learn the western style of dress-making. I wanted to go to London at first, but I guess Toronto is good enough…,” she jokes.

Claiming she is a “student forever”, Batra has now enrolled into Toronto’s International Academy of Design.

“There are so many high-profile Canadian fashion designers, but I guess the ones who really get noticed worldwide are the Italian and the French. I wonder why, though,” she muses.

Batra first began doing freelance assignments for renowned boutiques in Toronto, using her Indian clothes with the western look. And as she worked, she questioned the rules.

“Why should the sari have pleats only in the front?” she thought to herself and changed things. Now, you have them running through the waistline, giving the sari a fuller and more unconventional look.

“I even experimented with the mermaid sari that tapers mid-way and then flares up at the bottom. It looks glamorous and different. And anything that is a cut above the rest is a definite sellout,” says Batra.

While doing her enhanced fashion designing course at the International Academy of Design and her freelance work for boutiques, she somehow finds time to do a part-time job at Marks ‘n’ Spencers.

The designer outlet gives her exposure to western wear. Once home, she dabbles with her own designs.

“The colours have to be bright, but not garish and the style subtle and, yet, not stand-offish,” she says. She made her point at the fashion show held at the India’s 50th anniversary celebrations three years ago.

“I don’t design for any particular age group, but prefer catering to anybody who has the urge to look different and daring,” she says.

“I don’t have any particular theme for my designs. But, yes, for the westerner it is India coming alive,” she says.

Review:A to Z Guide for Home Builders

Pictures on the walls

You obviously want an attractive site that you can proudly tell your friends about and print on your business card. The best way is to use some attractive visuals, add those flashy headers and animated gifs, and now we’re getting somewhere.

Free visuals and images abound on the Net. And many generous designers give it all away for free. So all you need to do is go to these sites, click on the images you want to borrow and use it in your own. However, remember, the heavier the images, the more time will it take to download your page. So try and keep them small and relevant.

What about design?

The key to getting people to your site is promotion but to make them return is all about great design.

Many of us give in to the temptation of big, flashy graphics and large typefaces in bold red. Doing good design requires patience and time. Here are sites that will get you started…

How do I add the frills?

Once the basics are done, you are ready to host your site. But some of you will want more. Like a counter at the bottom to keep track of how many people have visited the page. Or a message board where browsers can discuss a specific topic within your site. This, however, depends on your hosting service, so check with them too. Or maybe an opinion poll or a service that can let people search the Web from your page!

What about that cool animated menu?

Now we’re talking of a slightly higher ground. But don’t worry, there’s nothing you have to do yourself. Most animation menus, pop-ups, scrollers and background colour changes are just a matter of adding some javascript to your HTML code.

The Webmonkey guide is especially helpful and has a collection of code fragments, function packages - a resource containing generalised code, specific workarounds, and good ideas that you can use to enhance your pages in ways you may not know how or might not want to bother with.

Code samples are provided free for use on your own Web pages, but modification and redistribution of the code may depend on the author. Many tech people love creating this stuff (its challenging, you know) and then distributing it for free. At the most you will need to indicate the source of the code in your copy. And if you’re using someone else’s efforts to spruce up your page, it’s only fair to give some credit to these hard working computer geeks.

Free java applets, games, downloads and programming tutorials are easily available. Remember to read all the instructions. When it comes to this stuff, leaving out an otherwise innocent looking sign can wreak havoc on your page!

Promotion

And no, I’m not talking about what’s long overdue on the job front. You’ve built a great looking site, but somebody has to come and have a look, right? There are many ways you can get the word out (again, for free!) and it is recommended that if you want the counter ticking furiously you try and use as many tools as possible.

So amidst this plethora of Web sites, how do you make your voice heard? Make sure you submit your site to all the major search engines. There are services that can help you do this and if this is offered for free, you might have to carry their banner on your site (fair, right?!). Make sure you’re using the right keywords when submitting your site.

Other promotional tools you can use are banner and link exchanges where you will have to advertise someone else’s banner and they will then do the same for you. There are a lot of sites that offer this facility and it is better to find out what the conditions are before you go ahead. You can also get yourself listed in Web directories. Most hosting services will enlist you in their members directories, so that you are visible to that community.

Webrings are common way of making your presence felt amongst sites that are similar to yours in nature. A Webring is a group of sites on the Web with a similar theme that point to each other in a ring formation. It’s a great way of connecting with people on the Internet who share your interests! For example, if you were dedicating your site to Pamela Anderson, you can join a PA Webring. This usually has to be approved of by the administrator of that Webring.

It’s an ongoing project

Don’t you really hate visiting sites that have broken links and were last updated in September 1998?

As you might have realised by now, the secret of a good Web page is that it is updated frequently. Keep yourself updated on the developments in Web site technology, hosting, writing, design etc, and how you can use these to improve your page. There are a lot of resources that will help you stay ahead. In the virtual world, something that was new yesterday is stale today. So treat it your Web site as an ongoing project.

After all, it’s your identity and face in the virtual world, and you do want to put up an attractive face, don’t you?

Professional logo design services for your business by 123triad

Your company logo is arguably the single most important element when it comes to building a recognizable brand and increasing customer awareness.

Many business owners underestimate the importance of a professionally designed logo. Your company logo forms the basis of your entire corporate image - a companion for the life of the business it represents. The design process should be given serious consideration during the strategic planning phase to ensure the final logo accurately reflects the core focus of your business.

It must be remembered that your company logo is associated with practically every aspect of your company, from your business card and letterheads to your invoices and marketing material. If you fail to design a logo that projects your business in the correct way, you will almost certainly go through the expensive and time consuming process of rethinking your entire corporate identity - an unnecessary and avoidable experience.

Technical Manual Writing AgreementReview List

This review list is provided to inform you about this document in question and assist you in its preparation. Technical manual writing is tricky because the writer has to be intimately familiar with the program to make the project work well. This is rarely the case in fact. As a result, most technical manuals are not as effective as they should be for the end user’s purposes.

  1. Make multiple copies. Give each signer an original copy.
  2. Be sure the technical writer has enough documentation, information, and skill, as a practical matter, for them to succeed in the project. Otherwise, both parties will be unhappy with the outcome—and no legal document will cure that unhappiness, no matter how well crafted.

Software License, End-User
Review List

This review list is provided to help you to complete the Software License, for End-Users, especially to be used with prepackaged shrink-wrapped software. We have included certain explanations, which are not required in a license agreement but make it more understandable and therefore encourage compliance by the End-User, in our experience as a software company ourselves. 1. The Prepackaged Software License, also known as a “Shrink-wrap” Software License, is designed for use with software sold through retailers or other mass market retailers such as Best Buy or Wal*Mart. 2. Whether a license of this sort is enforceable depends on a number of facts and the controlling law. Among other factors, making the license available for inspection in advance of purchase and ensuring that the terms of the license governing acceptance are consistent with the distribution and sale of the software are important. However, the primary purpose of the license is to put people on notice about unauthorized use of the software so if enforcement against them is required, they cannot claim to have been ignorant of your warnings
